Sr. Principal Engineer
About the Role
Invitation Homes set out to solve a real problem: home leasing options were limited and the experience for renters was inconsistent. Today, as the nation’s largest single-family home rental company, our engineering teams build the technology at the center of that solution — personalized resident experiences, service tools, and the operational systems that residents and associates depend on every day. When we ship, people feel it.
We’ve built an engineering culture that takes that responsibility seriously: collaborative teams, high standards, and a genuine investment in the people around you. Great software is built by engineers who are supported, growing, and proud of what they ship. This role sits at the pinnacle of the individual contributor track — what some organizations call a Distinguished Engineer. You operate as a peer to executive engineering leadership, shaping the company’s long-term technical trajectory through expertise, judgment, and the trust you’ve built across the organization. Your technical depth is your currency — you engage hands-on where it matters most — but your day-to-day centers on the decisions, standards, and relationships that define how the entire company builds.
From here, you’ll have a clear path to Tech Fellow — the highest individual contributor distinction in the engineering organization.
What You’ll Do
Technical Leadership
- Stay technically active in the most selective way: engage directly with the hardest problems where it matters most — your depth is your credibility.
- Own the company’s most complex, highest-stakes technical challenges: those that span teams, systems, and organizational boundaries.
- Define and drive the company-wide technical vision, ensuring architecture and technology investments align with long-term business strategy.
- Serve as a key technical voice in build, buy, and partner decisions — providing the depth and rigor that informs choices at the executive level.
- Identify systemic technical risks, gaps, and opportunities not visible from within any single team or domain; drive durable solutions.
- Raise the technical ceiling of the engineering organization by establishing standards, patterns, and practices — including automation — that others build on.
Knowledge & Standards
- Possess mastery across multiple technical domains and architectural styles, with the ability to engage credibly at any level of depth across the stack.
- Shape the company’s long-term technology strategy by evaluating emerging trends, tools, and paradigms against the specific context and constraints of Invitation Homes.
- Maintain deep business understanding — connect technical decisions directly to strategic outcomes, and translate constraints in both directions.
- Actively engage with the external engineering community to keep the organization informed, competitive, and connected to industry direction.
Communication & Collaboration
- Advise and partner with executive leadership as a technical peer — communicate with the clarity, confidence, and strategic framing that decisions at that level require.
- Distill the most complex technical challenges into language that is actionable for both engineering teams and non-technical leaders.
- Set the standard for technical discourse across the company — how architectural decisions are made, documented, and communicated.
- Influence without authority: bring people along through reasoning, credibility, and empathy — this is your primary tool.
Leadership & Culture
- Act as the cultural standard-bearer for technical excellence: model the rigor, humility, and curiosity that define great engineering at scale.
- Mentor and develop Staff and Principal Engineers, investing deliberately in the growth of the next generation of senior IC leaders.
- Own the most consequential architectural decisions, providing the clarity and conviction needed when the path forward is genuinely hard.
- Govern the company’s technical direction in partnership with engineering leadership, ensuring decisions are coherent, well-reasoned, and built to last.
- Maintain a bias to action at the company level — anticipate systemic risks before they surface, intervene decisively, and keep the organization moving toward its technical future.
What You Bring
- 12+ years of professional software development experience, with a demonstrated track record of technical impact at the company level.
- Mastery across multiple technical domains and architectural styles, with the ability to engage credibly at any level of depth across a modern technology stack.
- A proven track record as a trusted technical advisor to executive leadership, with experience shaping technology strategy at organizational scale.
- Demonstrated ability to connect technical decisions to business strategy — and to translate between the two for audiences at every level.
- A proven ability to serve as the company’s technical voice — communicating with precision and authority at every level, from engineering teams to executive leadership to the broader business.
- A track record of mentoring Staff and Principal Engineers and investing in the growth of the next generation of senior IC leaders.
- A sense of stewardship over engineering excellence — you see yourself as a custodian of the technical culture and standards that outlast any individual.
- Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, CI/CD practices, and modern iterative software delivery.
- A degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
Our Stack
Our engineering teams work with TypeScript, Node.js, React, PostgreSQL, and AWS — including Lambda, DynamoDB, and RDS. We practice CI/CD, favor infrastructure as code, and build on REST APIs and event-driven architectures. Salesforce is a significant part of our technology landscape — some teams build directly on the platform, while others integrate with Salesforce-managed APIs. Experience with these is a strong plus — though we care more about depth of thinking, adaptability, and the drive to keep learning than familiarity with any specific tool.
