Sr. Principal Engineer
As a Sr. Principal Engineer, you operate at the company level as one of the most senior technical individual contributors. You are a peer to executive engineering leadership, shaping the company’s long-term technical trajectory. Your influence is earned entirely through expertise, judgment, and the trust you’ve built across the organization. You tackle the most complex, highest-stakes technical challenges, set the standard for how engineering thinks and works at scale, and ensure that our technology decisions serve the company’s ambitions for years to come.
Impact
- Define and drive the company-wide technical vision, ensuring our architecture and technology investments are aligned with long-term business strategy.
- Take ownership of the most complex, ambiguous, and high-consequence technical problems: those that span teams, systems, and organizational boundaries.
- Identify systemic technical risks, gaps, and opportunities that are not visible from within any single team or domain, and drive durable solutions.
- Serve as a key technical voice in build, buy, and partner decisions, providing depth and rigor that informs executive choices.
- Stay technically active in the most selective way: engage directly with the hardest problems where it matters most — your depth is your credibility.
- Raise the technical ceiling of the entire engineering organization by establishing standards, patterns, and practices — including automation — that others build on.
Reach
- Company
Your influence spans the entire engineering organization and extends into the executive layer. You are a trusted technical advisor to the VP of Engineering and senior leadership, with the credibility and depth to shape decisions at the company level. You lead through expertise and relationships, not authority.
Knowledge
- Possess mastery across multiple technical domains and architectural styles, with the ability to credibly engage at any level of depth across the stack.
- Shape the company’s long-term technology strategy by evaluating emerging trends, tools, and paradigms against the specific context and constraints of Invitation Homes.
- Maintain a deep enough understanding of the business to connect technical decisions directly to strategic outcomes, and translate constraints in both directions.
- Actively engage with the external engineering community to keep the organization informed, competitive, and connected to industry direction.
Communication
- Advise and partner with executive leadership as a technical peer, communicating with the clarity, confidence, and strategic framing that decisions at that level require.
- Distill the most complex technical challenges into language that is actionable for both engineering teams and non-technical leaders.
- Set the standard for technical discourse across the company: how architectural decisions are made, documented, and communicated.
- Influence without authority: your ability to bring people along through reasoning, credibility, and empathy is your primary tool.
Leadership
- Mentor and develop engineers across the IC track, with a particular focus on Staff and Principal Engineers and the growth of the next generation of senior IC leaders.
- Act as the cultural standard-bearer for technical excellence, modeling the rigor, humility, and curiosity that define great engineering at scale.
- Own the most consequential architectural decisions, providing the clarity and conviction needed when the path forward is genuinely hard.
- Govern the company’s technical direction in partnership with engineering leadership, ensuring decisions are coherent, well-reasoned, and built to last.
