Tech Fellow

About the Role

Invitation Homes set out to solve a real problem: home leasing options were limited and the experience for renters was inconsistent. Today, as the nation’s largest single-family home rental company, our engineering teams build the technology at the center of that solution — personalized resident experiences, service tools, and the operational systems that residents and associates depend on every day. When we ship, people feel it.

We’ve built an engineering culture that takes that responsibility seriously: collaborative teams, high standards, and a genuine investment in the people around you. Great software is built by engineers who are supported, growing, and proud of what they ship. The Tech Fellow is the highest level of technical distinction at Invitation Homes — an executive-level individual contributor whose expertise and influence extend beyond the company into the broader engineering industry. You combine the strategic perspective of an executive with the depth of the organization’s foremost technical practitioner: partnering with executive leadership to define technical vision and investment priorities, and embedding directly with teams to design and deliver the company’s most critical and complex initiatives. Your influence shapes not only how technology evolves at Invitation Homes, but how Invitation Homes is recognized as a technology organization in the world.

What You’ll Do

Technical Leadership

  • Provide direct, hands-on technical leadership for the company’s most critical and complex initiatives — from design and prototyping through to delivery.
  • Define the enterprise technical strategy, aligning technology investments with business priorities and long-term growth objectives.
  • Establish governance frameworks, standards, and reference architectures that ensure consistency, quality, and strategic alignment across the entire organization.
  • Serve as one of the senior-most technical authorities in the company, advising the executive team on opportunities, risks, and emerging trends across the technology landscape.
  • Partner with Engineering, Product, Data, Security, Legal, and Business leaders to ensure high-impact technology adoption that is secure, scalable, and aligned with company values.
  • Build reusable frameworks, reference implementations, and internal platforms — including automation tooling — that raise the technical floor for teams across engineering.

Knowledge & Standards

  • Maintain the deepest technical expertise in the organization, with mastery across systems, architecture, and the emerging technology paradigms most relevant to the business.
  • Shape the company’s long-term technology strategy by evaluating new tools, platforms, and architectural approaches against business context, risk, and strategic goals.
  • Go beyond consuming industry trends — actively contribute to them through recognized expertise, published thinking, or community leadership that shapes how the broader engineering world approaches the problems Invitation Homes faces.
  • Translate the most complex technical concepts and trade-offs into clear strategic recommendations that resonate at the executive level.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Partner directly with executive leadership as the senior-most technical voice, influencing strategy, investment priorities, and organizational direction.
  • Represent Invitation Homes externally — through thought leadership, conference participation, community engagement, and industry relationships.
  • Set the standard for how technical vision, strategy, and governance are communicated across the organization.
  • Bring clarity to the most ambiguous and consequential technical decisions, making it easier for the whole organization to understand, align, and act.

Leadership & Culture

  • Model what it means to be a technical leader at the highest level: rigorous, humble, curious, externally connected, and deeply invested in the success of others.
  • Mentor and develop Sr. Principal and Principal Engineers, investing in the long-term growth of senior IC talent across the organization.
  • Establish and steward the company’s technical governance — ensuring the most consequential decisions are grounded in sound principles, well-documented, and built to last.
  • Champion a culture of intellectual honesty, high standards, and shared ownership of outcomes — the foundation of engineering at its best.
  • Maintain a bias to action at the industry level — stay ahead of the technological horizon, identify consequential shifts before they arrive, and position Invitation Homes to lead rather than follow.

What You Bring

  • 15+ years of professional software development experience, with a demonstrated track record of technical impact at the industry level.
  • The deepest technical expertise across systems, architecture, and emerging technology paradigms — with a recognized presence in the broader engineering community.
  • Experience as a trusted executive-level technical advisor, shaping technology strategy and investment decisions at the highest organizational level.
  • A track record of actively contributing to the engineering industry — through published work, conference leadership, open source, or community influence.
  • An established record of high-impact technical communication — across executive strategy sessions, published thought leadership, and industry forums — that represents Invitation Homes as a technology leader.
  • A track record of mentoring Sr. Principal and Principal Engineers and investing in the long-term growth of senior IC leaders.
  • A legacy mindset — you invest not just in the organization, but in the practices, ideas, and people that will shape the engineering field for years to come.
  • Hands-on experience with cloud platforms, CI/CD practices, and modern iterative software delivery.
  • A degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.

Our Stack

Our engineering teams work with TypeScript, Node.js, React, PostgreSQL, and AWS — including Lambda, DynamoDB, and RDS. We practice CI/CD, favor infrastructure as code, and build on REST APIs and event-driven architectures. Salesforce is a significant part of our technology landscape — some teams build directly on the platform, while others integrate with Salesforce-managed APIs. Experience with these is a strong plus — though we care more about depth of thinking, adaptability, and the drive to keep learning than familiarity with any specific tool.
