VP of Engineering
About the Role
Invitation Homes set out to solve a real problem: home leasing options were limited and the experience for renters was inconsistent. Today, as the nation’s largest single-family home rental company, our engineering teams build the technology at the center of that solution — personalized resident experiences, service tools, and the operational systems that residents and associates depend on every day. When we ship, people feel it.
We’ve built an engineering culture that takes that responsibility seriously: collaborative teams, high standards, and a genuine investment in the people around you. Great software is built by engineers who are supported, growing, and proud of what they ship. The VP of Engineering is the senior-most engineering executive — accountable for the technical vision, organizational outcomes, and external reputation of engineering at Invitation Homes. You own how engineering operates as a business function: what the organization invests in, how it is structured, and how it delivers on its commitments. You partner across the company and with external stakeholders to ensure technology strategy drives long-term competitive advantage, and you represent engineering externally — building the reputation that attracts talent, earns partner trust, and positions Invitation Homes as a technology organization in the world.
What You’ll Do
Technical Leadership
- Own the technical vision for the organization — define how engineering investments translate into product and business outcomes for residents, associates, and investors.
- Make or directly inform the highest-stakes build, buy, and partner decisions, ensuring the company develops and maintains the right technology capabilities.
- Set the standard for engineering execution across the full organization: quality, delivery, operational excellence, and automation as a first-class discipline.
- Drive accountability for engineering outcomes at the executive level — including delivery, budget, and organizational design.
- Select and negotiate with strategic vendors, ensuring technology partnerships deliver high business value and appropriate risk assurance.
Knowledge & Standards
- Maintain the technical depth to engage credibly in architecture, code quality, and design decisions — and to know when to lead and when to empower.
- Stay ahead of emerging trends across cloud architecture, security, and the technology landscape, and apply them strategically to keep the organization competitive.
- Understand the financial dimensions of engineering at the company level: forecasting, resource planning, and managing a budget in alignment with business outcomes.
- Develop a broad command of the vendor and partner landscape — the trade-offs between building, buying, and partnering at scale.
Communication & Collaboration
- Communicate the engineering vision and strategy with clarity and confidence at the executive level, translating technical complexity into business impact.
- Represent engineering externally — through thought leadership, industry engagement, and a recruiting presence that reflects Invitation Homes as a technology organization.
- Bring engineering, business, and external partners into alignment through strong interpersonal skills and high organizational trust.
- Partner with the CIO and executive peers across Product, Finance, and Business Operations to ensure engineering is a valued and visible contributor to company strategy.
Leadership & Culture
- Hire, develop, and retain a high-performing, diverse organization of engineering leaders and teams.
- Coach and grow Sr. Directors, Directors, and senior engineering leaders — building the next generation of engineering executives.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, curiosity, automation, and continuous improvement that is felt at every level of the engineering organization.
- Model low-ego, action-oriented leadership — decisive when needed, collaborative by default, and always focused on enabling others to succeed.
- Champion diversity and inclusion as a foundation for team strength and organizational resilience.
- Build and steward Invitation Homes’ reputation as a technology organization — externally through community and industry engagement, and internally through the standards and culture you set.

Our Stack
Our engineering teams work with TypeScript, Node.js, React, PostgreSQL, and AWS — including Lambda, DynamoDB, and RDS. We practice CI/CD, favor infrastructure as code, and build on REST APIs and event-driven architectures. Salesforce is a significant part of our technology landscape — some teams build directly on the platform, while others integrate with Salesforce-managed APIs. Experience with these is a strong plus — though we care more about depth of thinking, adaptability, and the drive to keep learning than familiarity with any specific tool.
